Whether you’re a juicing novice or a total pro, you may be surprised by all that you can do with your juicer. Read on to learn more.
Hydrating fruits and veggies are best. “Fruits and veggies with a high water content are typically the best choices for juicing at home,” advises our culinary dietitian, Sherene Chou, MS, RD. “And while we love frozen produce for smoothies, fresh is best for juicing.” Items like apples, cucumbers, celery, oranges, lemons, limes, and watermelon are always popular choices, but there are less obvious produce items that work great as well. When you want to mix it up, try grapes, kiwis, pears, or even strawberries.
Juice cubes. For more convenience, you can prepare juice in advance and freeze it in ice cube trays to enjoy at a later date. Have a surplus of lemons? Frozen lemon juice cubes are a great addition to unsweetened iced tea. Want to use up your cucumbers before they spoil? Cucumber cubes can take a plain glass of water to a whole new level of refreshment.
Pump up flavor with herbs and spices. There are some ingredients outside of the standard fruit and veggie haul that can really take your homemade juices to the next level. Jalapeño, for example, can add a spicy kick of flavor. Turmeric, ginger root, and herbs like parsley are other ingredients our in-house chef, Mayra Lopez, often incorporates in juice recipes to pump up the flavor and health appeal.
Cocktail Mixes. While there’s no denying the health benefits of sipping on a fruit and veggie-packed juice, there’s also no judgment from us if you plan on using your juice in a cocktail every now and then. Aside from tasting amazing, fresh juice can help you stay hydrated while drinking alcohol. Watermelon, for example, is particularly hydrating, as it’s composed of more than 90 percent water. It’s also a natural source of the electrolyte potassium. Cheers to that!
